Mark your calendars for July 17 when standout jazz singer Alicia Olatuja will wow the crowd with her soulful melodies at Faena Theater.
Summer Jazz Series will run at Faena Theater from May through September with a diverse lineup that includes both returning artists and outstanding new voices. Presented by American Airlines.
Guests may remember Alicia Olatuja for her breakthrough performance with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Or maybe from her performances at the Charlie Parker Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival or the Jazz at Lincoln Center commissioned tour, Songs of Freedom.
Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, this dynamic songstress, well-versed in styles from gospel and soul to jazz and classical, has been surrounded by music since childhood. In 2014, lauded composer and pianist Billy Childs brought her on his tour, “Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro,” and the rest is history. DownBeat magazine says, “Olatuja possesses a special instrument: a full-bodied tone, precise pitch and personal engagement at the lowest whisper or highest wail.”
Fans can expect she’ll perform songs from her sophomore album, “Intuition: From the Minds of Women.” The album draws inspiration from talented female composers and includes classics from Tracy Chapman, Sade and Kate Bush.
