Faena Rose

Arts, Miami

Faena Rose is our art and culture-based private members club, which brings together a dynamic community of like-minded individuals through a robust, year-round calendar of the most engaging and transformative cultural experiences.

To kick off Miami Art Week, award-winning artist Mickalene Thomas will join Rose members for a conversation moderated by writer and curator, Dr. Maura Reilly, in collaboration with The Feminist Institute. Celebrated for her texturally rich paintings, collages, photography, video, and installations, Mickalene will discuss how she draws on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power. With influences ranging from early modernist masters to the civil rights movement and second wave of feminism, Mickalene constructs complex imagery that effectively challenges common representations of women. Her work can be found in exhibitions around the world as well as the permanent collections of MoMA, The Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, and National Portrait Gallery, among many others.

Iconic artist Christo will also join Rose members during Christo for a pre-release screening of the new documentary, Walking on Water, followed by a Q&A with the artist. The film is a cinéma vérité look at Christo’s process during the creation of his most recent large-scale installation, The Floating Piers, on Italy’s Lake Iseo. Originally conceived in 1970 by Christo and his late wife and collaborator, Jeanne-Claude, the stunning, site-specific masterpiece was first realized 10 years after her passing. Documented with uncensored access to Christo and his team, Walking on Water is an unprecedented portrait of a man chasing a dream against the backdrop of epic madness—the complex dealings that merge between art and state politics, engineering challenges and logistical nightmares, and the sheer force of nature. Having created some of the most visually breathtaking works of the last 60 years, Christo and Jeanne-Claude are included in the permanent collections of the most prestigious museums around the world, and the exhibition Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, 1980-83 is currently on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
