The Moon Light is a beautiful moon-shaped lamp stamped with 3D lunar topography accurately based on measurements from the lunar orbiter Kaguya. Designed by the artist Eisuke Tachikawa, the piece was presented at Dwell on Design on Japan 2012, and meant as a homage to those who sough hope in the moon after the 2012 Tsunami.

“All of the people affected by the earthquake in Japan prayed to the Super Moon, the biggest moon in the last 18 years,” explained Tachikawa.

Apart from being a faithful replica of the surface of the moon, this LED-lamp also irradiates a very moon-like light which was intended to bring comfort and symbolic illumination to the victims. And, most amazingly, it fits in the palm of a hand. Tachikawa somehow managed to pull our great mirror down from the skies and permit people to hold it in their hands and see all its faces at once. The dark side became lighted for them.

With this glowing sculpture, Tachikawa offered his country much needed solace and charm.
