Ascension - Diego Gravinese
A monumental mural by artist Diego Gravinese, commissioned for The Cathedral at Faena New York, that illuminates the sacred path of inner transformation through the Tree of Life, guiding the viewer from pure potential to full manifestation.
Ascension unfolds as a cyclical narrative of self-discovery, awakening, and our place within the cosmos. Monumental figures anchor moments along this journey, embodying the tension between ego and spiritual transformation.
From left to right, time transitions, moving through stages of wisdom and understanding from day into night and birth into rebirth. At the center, the Colossal Woman embodies the feminine as an essential force of cosmic harmony. Hidden throughout the mural, smaller vignettes weave stories of creation and transformation. The journey begins with the unmanifested potential of the Cosmic Egg and culminates in the realized unity of self and Cosmos.
This site-specific mural was commissioned by Faena and conceived specifically for the monumental scale and spiritual resonance of the Cathedral at Faena New York.
Diego Gravinese is a contemporary artist known for his hyper realistic paintings that blur the line between photography and painting. Born in Buenos Aires in 1971, he developed a distinctive style that combines meticulous detail with a dream-like, sometimes surreal atmosphere.
Gravinese’s work often explores themes of nostalgia, intimacy, and the unexpected
within everyday moments. Using oil and acrylic on canvas, he creates strikingly lifelike compositions that capture light, texture, and emotion with remarkable precision.
His painting challenge perception, inviting viewers to question the boundaries between reality and representation. His work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums across the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
Over the years, Gravinese has gained recognition as one of South America’s leading contemporary artists, continuously pushing the limits of realism in painting.
