Inspire

Here we share a selection of talented people who have outspoken their devotion to meditation practices.

The benefits of meditation are made more clear every day. Those who have practiced this technique know it, as the results are profound and timely. But for those who haven’t gotten to it yet, this list may well encourage them. The following list mentions a few of the many talented and inspiring people who have benefited from meditation in their professional and daily lives.

Some assert that meditation is the most valuable tool we have to evolve as a species. And even if it can’t be proven, it at least seems hard to discard with convincing arguments.

Kurt Vonnegut: Vonnegut’s wife and daughter were devout followers of Transcendental Meditation, and though he was less so, he did believe that writing was a form of meditation. “I believe that reading and writing are the most nourishing forms of meditation anyone has so far found. By reading the writings of the most interesting minds in history, we meditate with our own minds and theirs as well. This to me is a miracle.”

Buckminster Fuller: Though perhaps better known for his geodesic domes, Buck Fuller was a great advocate of meditation, though not only for personal gains. Fuller believed that meditation should be used for the good of everyone, and to help make a more creative, peaceful and sustainable world.

Howard Stern: Though it may seem unbelievable, the subversive radio star has something to do with meditation. Stern is, in fact, a great admirer of this practice. Initiated in the technique by his mother, Stern has meditated 18 years, using it to relax and even to help him quit smoking.

David Lynch: One of the greatest Hollywood devotees of Transcendental Meditation, Lynch has practiced since 1973. He founded the David Lynch Foundation, in which he raises money for TM education. He believes that meditation helps channel the creative processes and reduces the existential pain we all have inside.

Martin Scorsese: Though this genius director only recently discovered meditation, he says it has already made a great impact in his life. “For the last few years, I’ve been practicing meditation. It’s difficult to describe the effect it’s had on my life. I can only mention maybe a few words: calm, clarity, a balance, and, at times, a recognition. It’s made a difference.”

Jerry Seinfeld: The comedian Jerry Seinfeld has been meditating for 37 years and says the practice has given him a peace he hadn’t known before.

Mick Jagger: Once known for his habits of partying and extravagance, Jagger now uses other ways to unwind. He dedicates a lot of time to meditation, even going to Laos for long periods of time to meditate alongside Buddhist monks.

Steve Jobs: Jobs turned the Apple company into a technological giant, and part of his success can be accredited to meditation. Jobs thought Zen meditation taught him how to concentrate and ignore his distractions, key factors to reaching any goal.

Al Gore: Ex vice president and global warming activist, Al Gore, much like Bill Clinton, took up meditation as a way to reduce stress and channel his thoughts to one specific problem.
