On April 25, the book “Alan Faena: Alchemy & Creative Collaboration. Architecture, Design, Art.” was presented to the world, with a conversation between Tina Brown and Alan Faena himself at Rizzoli’s bookstore in New York.
Published by Rizzoli, the book tells the story of Mr. Faena in 240 pages, from his childhood in Argentina to his years as a model, designer, gardener in Uruguay and his role in the transformation of urban landscapes.
Mr. Faena began his career in fashion when he founded Via Vai, a brand known for its irreverent and colorful designs, that—in a time when Argentina was coming out of the dark times of a dictatorship—became an icon of self-expression and freedom among young
people, “I never thought of myself as a fashion designer” said Alan Faena, “it just happened to be the mean of expression that was closer to me at that time”.
After much success, he later sold the company and retreated to the coast of Uruguay in Punta del Este to grow a garden of roses— something that many believed impossible to do—and after two years of retreat in Tierra Santa (the name of his house in Uruguay), he realized he still had much to give to the world, and devised the idea of creating a multifunctional cultural destination in the then-abandoned docklands of Buenos Aires.
Time passed, and Mr. Faena turned his attention to Miami, as he fell in love with its unique culture, its glamour and its sense of familiarity. Again, he transformed a forgotten neighborhood into a lively destination, featuring two hotels, a multi-disciplinary space—the
Faena Forum— a retail building—Faena Bazaar—and a series of condominium units. When asked about what was his actual source of inspiration, he simply replied “Love”.
All these topics and others filled the conversation, lead by Tina Brown, an award-winning journalist, editor author and founder of Tina Brown Live Media, who was previously editor-in-chief of Tatler, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and is also the author of
the best-selling biography of the Princess of Wales, The Diana Chronicles and of last year’s The Vanity Fair Diaries. She is also host of the podcast TBD with Tina Brown. In 2000, Ms. Brown was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen for her services to journalism.
