Faena LIVE and American Airlines proudly present the third annual Summer Jazz Series at Faena Theater, a five-month concert series featuring jazz’s brightest stars and emerging talent.
3rd Annual Summer Jazz Series | May through September
Curated by Grammy-nominated producer Rachel Faro and hosted by the legendary Grammy-nominated percussionist, Sammy Figueroa, the 2019 installment of Faena’s Summer Jazz Series will feature intimate performances by rising pianist Brandon Goldberg, singer Veronica Swift with the Shelly Berg Trio, singer Alicia Olatuja, and pianist Matthew Whitaker. Host Sammy Figueroa will close out the spectacular series alongside his Latin Jazz Explosion and Maria Rivas.
The third annual Summer Jazz Series at Faena Theater debuts on May 15 with monthly performances through September. Past artists of this exciting series include Grammy award-winner Jazzmeia Horn, Grammy nominee Christian Sands, Brazilian singer Mirella Costa and singer/composer Allan Harris.
Jazz pianist and composer Brandon Goldberg is only 13 years old, but rarely have we seen someone play with so much swing! The young artist has appeared on the Harry Connick Jr. show, NBC’s “Little Big Shots” and “The Steve Harvey Show”; at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Apollo Theater, New York’s Blue Note Club, and with the Miami Symphony Orchestra. In August, he will be appearing at the Newport Jazz Festival. Brandon Goldberg's Faena Theater performance celebrates the release of his debut album, “Let’s Play!”
VERONICA SWIFT & THE SHELLY BERG TRIO

At 24 years old, Veronica Swift is widely recognized as one of the top jazz singers on the scene. In the fall of 2015, she won second place at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. Since graduating from the Frost School of Music in December 2016, she has performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Chris Botti, and Benny Green Trip, among many others. A five-time Grammy-nominated pianist, arranger and composer, Shelly Berg is also the dean of the prestigious Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Praised by “The New York Times” as “a singer with a strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage,” Alicia Olatuja astounds audiences with her gorgeous voice, artistic versatility and captivating demeanor. She first came into the national spotlight as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Her most recent album, “Intuition: From The Minds of Women”, celebrates the songs of female composers from Brenda Russell to Tracy Chapman. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, she is one of three featured vocalists on the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s national touring project, Songs of Freedom.

Just 18 years old and blind since early childhood, Matthew Whitaker has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Harlem’s Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder’s Hall of Fame induction. He has also charmed millions through his television performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Fox’s “Showtime At The Apollo”, where he won first place. On August 21, the talented artist makes his return to Faena Theater after performing in Faena's 2018 Summer Jazz Series.

Famed percussionist Sammy Figueroa returns to Faena Theater with His Latin Jazz Explosion for another explosive performance of Latin Jazz featuring special guest Maria Rivas. As one of music's leading percussionists, Figueroa has played with some of the world's greatest artists, such as David Bowie, Chaka Khan and Mariah Carey, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, George Benson, and many more. Sammy Figueroa and The Latin All Stars will be joined by Maria Rivas, Venezuelan Latin jazz singer whose most recent album, “Motivos”, was nominated for a 2018 Latin Grammy. Rivas has also been recognized as a Latin Grammy Official Artist.
