Faena Art's Project Room - Heart of Community
APRIL 28 - OCTOBER 14, 2023
Faena Art's Project Room unveils "Heart of Community" an immersive, site-specific installation by Anabella Bergero.
HEART OF COMMUNITY
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Anabella Bergero: Heart of Community transforms the Faena Art Project Room into a site-specific installation featuring textile art, fashion design pieces, collage, and digitally printed murals that together create a Latinx Pop visual universe.
The exhibition proposes an immersive experience while establishing the Project Room as an alternative space that celebrates collective acts of creation through tie-dye workshops, the recording of the podcast MAS CULTURA POR FAVOR, and an open panel about art and community. The installation itself thus becomes the center heart for the enjoyment and production of creative acts. With the premise that art is a continuous state of encounter, Bergero sets in motion different forms of exchange—from creating a visual aesthetic that deconstructs stereotypical notions of Latinidad, to repurposing the art space as a community gathering hub.
The images seen throughout the Project Room represent a reconstruction of narrative, each piece carefully collaged from the artist’s own photographs. Kitsch religious pop iconography and the vibrant colors of urban Latin American life are omnipresent and taken from the details of everyday life, be it a religious altar found in a parking lot in Querétaro, a meat or flower market in Zócalo, or a dollar store in New York.
Heart of Community blurs the boundaries between inside and outside—private and public—through a translucent window mural that projects the interior display into the public sphere, making art an act of enjoyment beyond the walls of the gallery space. The artist invites her audience and passersby alike to look in, explore, and join in her artistic practice.
